  • Employee With Highest Performance Rating Seeks Reddit Advice After “Average” Colleague Gets 100% Hike

The original poster (OP) shared that they performed well throughout the year and even received great feedback from management.

In recent months, Reddit has become a popular platform for employees to share their job struggles and workplace concerns. Several subreddits have emerged where employees anonymously share their stories and also connect with others who face similar challenges. Recently, one employee took to the platform seeking advice after their colleague, despite being an average performer, received a 100% hike. In his post, titled ‘Employee with highest performance rating but with the lowest salary’, the original poster (OP) shared that they performed well throughout the year and even received great feedback from management.

“But here’s what happened. A colleague of mine performed average throughout the year, took long leaves, faked operation and attended interviews and grabbed offers. Now my manager has agreed to retain him and provide him 100% hike(to match his offer) and I am a bit sad,” the OP wrote.

They questioned whether their performance had no value. “To increase your pay, All they needed was an offer letter and not your hardwork throughout the year. Highest performer- hike per year : 9%. Avg performer with offer : 100%” they added.

The post quickly gained traction online. While some users suggested they switch jobs, others shared similar experiences.

“Well you learnt a lesson here. The only way to get hike in corporates is to switch (or try to switch). No matter how hard you work, you will never get more than 8%-10% usually. Most managers are technically illiterate. They have no idea how much effort a task takes and hence they can’t appreciate the hard work put by developers,” wrote one user.

“This happened to me in my previous company. Switched last month with close to 100% hike & couldn’t be happier. I really love the work culture in my current company. Slow down your work & Switch ASAP. There’s no point in waiting for the employer to correct the salary according to market standards,” shared a third user.

“Your teammate has given you a practical demonstration on how things work. Get your own offer and ask to match it,” suggested one user.

“You’re totally right to feel upset, hard work should matter more than outside offers, but sadly, that’s not how many companies operate. Document your wins, ask for a salary review, and start exploring other opportunities. Sometimes the only way to get paid what you’re worth is to prove your value elsewhere,” one user commented.

  • Unemployment Could Rise Sharply’: Jefferies Big Warning On AI

The report mentioned that a CEO of an AI firm has predicted that AI could replace 50 per cent of entry-level white-collar jobs within the next 1 to 5 years.

The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the job market is expected to fall on entry-level white-collar workers, says a report by Jefferies. The report highlighted that the unemployment among recent college graduates in the United States is now at 5.8 per cent, which is higher than the national average of 4 per cent and more than double the 2.7 per cent rate for all college graduates.

Jefferies said, “We believe AI’s most significant impact for investors will be through labour disruption, beginning with entry-level roles”.

This indicates that young people just entering the workforce are struggling more than others to find jobs.

AI is seen as one of the key reasons behind this shift. The report mentioned that Dario Amodei, CEO of AI firm Anthropic, has predicted that AI could replace 50 per cent of entry-level white-collar jobs within the next 1 to 5 years.

He also warned that unemployment could rise sharply, even reaching 10 per cent to 20 per cent if the trend continues.

The report also pointed out that many of the affected jobs are in fields like sales, customer support, software development, and marketing, areas where junior employees make up a large part of the workforce.

Even technical degrees are not a safe bet anymore. Recent graduates in Computer Engineering and Computer Science are among those facing higher-than-average unemployment rates, at 7.5 per cent and 6.1 per cent respectively.

Interestingly, it’s not just tech companies talking about AI anymore. Jefferies found that out of 419 U.S. companies discussing AI in their earnings calls since 2021, 40 per cent are from non-tech sectors like retail, finance, and healthcare.

Despite job losses in some areas, the report also shared mixed views from business leaders. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said AI has helped the company invest in new roles, and total employment has actually gone up.

However, Klarna’s CEO admitted that replacing staff with AI led to poorer customer service and may force them to rehire people.

Overall, the Jefferies report paints a complex picture. While AI brings opportunities for businesses to grow and improve efficiency, it also creates risks for young workers trying to start their careers.

The report suggested that companies, governments, and educators must act fast to help people gain new skills and adapt to this changing job market.

  • Microsoft Cuts Hundreds More Jobs After Firing 6,000 Last Month

Microsoft’s previous layoffs fell hardest on software engineers.

Microsoft cut hundreds more jobs just weeks after its largest layoff in years, underscoring the tech industry’s efforts to trim costs even as it plows billions of dollars into artificial intelligence.

More than 300 employees were told their positions had been eliminated on Monday, according to a Washington state notice reviewed by Bloomberg.

Microsoft spokesperson said the latest headcount reduction is in addition to the 6,000 job cuts announced last month. “We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,” the spokesperson said.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) boom has roiled the tech labor market because companies are prioritising AI-focused jobs and harnessing the technology to save money.

Microsoft and peers including Meta Platforms have touted the effectiveness of AI-assisted coding tools in speeding up the software development process. Last week, Salesforce said the internal use of AI has allowed it to hire fewer workers.

Microsoft’s previous layoffs fell hardest on software engineers. It couldn’t be determined what kind of jobs were affected Monday. As of June 2024, the company had about 228,000 full-time employees, 55 percent of whom were employed in the U.S.

  • Land-For-Jobs Case: Applicants From 1 State, Recruitment Pattern Under Probe

The CBI, presenting its arguments on framing charges in the land-for-job scam case, questioned how all applicants for Group D posts in some zones of Indian Railways could come from just one state.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), presenting its arguments on framing charges in the land-for-job scam case on Monday, questioned how all applicants for Group D posts in some zones of Indian Railways could come from just one State.

In this case, former Railway Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family members, former public servants, and job aspirants are accused.

Yadav is alleged to have granted railway jobs in exchange for land parcels from candidates or their relatives, either as gifts or at significantly reduced prices. The agency alleged that one lakh square feet of land was purchased for Rs 26 lakh.

Special Judge Vishal Gogne heard the submissions of senior advocate and Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) DP Singh, who appeared on behalf of the CBI. The special judge on Tuesday listed the matter for hearing on Wednesday.

It was submitted on behalf of the CBI that there was enormous pressure to clear the application. Multiple applications were cleared the same day.

Why does it happen so quickly? SPP questioned. The process was so tedious, he added. The certificates were never verified.

It was further submitted that there is sufficient evidence to show the cash transaction with the person whose land was sold directly or indirectly to Lalu Prasad Yadav at a discounted rate. The agency alleged that these people were appointed.

The Delhi High Court has already rejected Lalu Prasad Yadav’s plea seeking a stay on the trial court proceedings.

On May 31, the Delhi HC dismissed his petition. Justice Ravinder Dudeja had ruled that Yadav remains free to present his arguments before the trial court at the charge consideration stage, stating there were no compelling reasons to halt proceedings.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, Yadav had sought to quash the FIR, arguing that the CBI failed to obtain mandatory prior approval before proceeding with its inquiry. He contended that while approval was secured for others, it was not obtained in his case.

The CBI, opposing the petition on maintainability grounds, had argued that a sanction under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act was not required. It further stated that while a sanction under Section 19 was necessary, it had already been obtained.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family, and several others in connection with the land-for-jobs case.
